We took our first road trip this past week with Gabriel (AND the dogs!). We headed up to Portland, Maine for a couple days then made our way back down to Cape Cod and Rhode Island. Andy and I have done a lot of traveling, but these are three areas we had not been before. We also wanted to take Gabriel on a mini trip before our long two-week trip to South Carolina next week so we could take notes on how to travel well with Gabriel...we took a lot of notes.
Gabriel did rather well for most of the trip. He loves riding in the car and being carried in the Bjorn, both of which he spent extensive time in for the trip. We knew we were going to have to make multiple stops for him (feeding, changing, etc) so we weren't our usual road warrior selves, but as long as we kept in mind that we weren't going anywhere quickly, it was all right. I'll admit it was frustrating at times when Gabriel was ready to eat NOW and we were right in the middle of doing something, but we made it work and enjoyed seeing new places. The dogs were an added dimension of frustration, but nothing more than what we've been used to traveling with them the past six years. Anyone who knows us well knows that we take our dogs everywhere with us. This week was no exception.
Maine was beautiful and quaint (a place we like to spend more time exploring one day). We tried the crab, clam chowder and lobster, all of which were quite good. I was surprised at how cool it was in the middle of summer (50's at night)...I guess Maine is practically in Canada.
On down to Cape Cod, we thoroughly enjoyed the areas we visited. Again, with more time we'd like to visit this area more as well. We found that people aren't joking when they talk about cape cod style architecture...literally every structure in the area has this "look". Oh, and we had some killer fish and chips too. This was technically Gabriel's first visit to the ocean, although he slept through the whole day. Still, we suited him up in his swimsuit just because it was cute.
Our last stop was Rhode Island; we toured Brown University in downtown Providence, and on the way home swung by Newport. The Newport area was very cool and in fact we plan to take another day trip in August (sans dogs) to play on the beach here and tour the Golden Age mansions of the Vanderbilts and the like.
Below are the pics from our trip (oh and I also added the slideshow to the two-month previous post below; these are Gabriel's 8 and 9 week pictures)
