5 Months

The five month milestone for Judah has not been an easy one to come by. Although he is doing wonderfully in terms of sleeping and temperament, his weight gain (or lack thereof) continues to be poor. We had a weight check at the doctor today, which also happens to be his five month birthday, and is 13 pounds 0 ounces ... he has gained n.o.t.h.i.n.g. in 3 1/2 weeks :(. The doctor was not overly concerned, but of course instructed us to supplement. Since he did not tolerate the formula before, which is why I went back to solely breastfeeding, she put him on hypoallergenic formula (can you say expensive??!). We are hopeful that he will be able to take the formula and start gaining weight! Similarly, he did not do well with the rice cereal we started last week, so we are taking him off of that and starting other solids (prunes, pears, peaches). Clearly, he has an extremely sensitive system.

I discussed his feeding schedule/lack of weight gain and my low milk supply with the doctor also. My lactation consultant indicated that Judah may have a tight frenulum (the fold of tissue under your tongue that looks like a string), which may be preventing him from nursing properly and is keeping my milk low (hence poor weight gain), so the doctor agreed that Judah needs to be evaluated by en ENT. If his frenulum is indeed prohibiting him from nursing well, he will likely need to have it clipped (literally a 10 second procedure where they clip the tissue to allow for greater range of movement of the tongue). I am not thrilled with the idea of having his tongue clipped, but if it is necessary then we will have to do it I suppose.
