Family Camping - Opening Weekend

Back to Mongaup Pond we went this weekend for our annual family camping trip! We all look forward to this annual camping trip (which we have to book back in October!). We tried out a new camp site location again this year .. we've had mostly all good sites, but we haven't quite found "the one", one we love and book year after year. This one was pretty good, right on the water and off a closed loop, and also right by a hiking trail (pro and con; read: proximity to people). The boys are completely oblivious to anything that would bear reconsideration when it comes to camping, it is ALL good.

To our delight, when we arrived for opening weekend, the fire pits were stocked with wood! We do enjoy walking through the woods looking for wood with the boys, but I'm not gonna lie, it was nice to do just a little bit of that. It also helped because we don't have a lot of time before dark on the first day.

We played down by the water, rented a row boat and took it out exploring a few times, we had light saber battles with the foam noodle light sabers left over from Gabriel's birthday (imagine the confusion on our camp site neighbor's face), we played soccer (Gabriel named my team the "little miss muffet sat on a tuffet pink team" ... um, yea), we rode scooters, bikes and big wheels (yes we brought all three modes of transportation), had a few cozy hours of reading in the tent while it rained a bit, roasted marshmallows (sort of, the boys like to just eat them out of the bag, or put them on the stick and roast them for 10 seconds), ate a lot of junk food we don't normally eat, hiked (on trail and off), and found a bunch of trees cut down by beavers. Also, the boys picked a bouquet of flowers for me to sit on the picnic table ... in a batman cup. Perfect.

Our site!

We had just enough time to get camp set up before dusk

Breaking a stick over his knee :)

Breaking sticks ... endlessly ... for fun

My bouquet!

A great climbing tree at the waterfront of our site

Putting out the fire is just as enthralling as building it...

See you next year!
