Kick off to Fall would not be complete without a trip to the apple orchard for the apple cider donuts, er, I mean delicious fresh-from-the-farm apples. We've been going to Ochs (pronounced "ox") orchard since before we had the boys.
This year was a little late for us, which means the apples were a bit picked over, but the trip is always fun no matter what. We usually get too many apples anyway for our ambitious Fall baking list, so we solved this problem by only getting one bag this year, which was about all we could fill with the apples that were still on the trees and in good shape.
We really lucked out with the weather too. It was threatening to storm all morning, and we've had some atypical weather already this Fall so we had contemplated canceling the trip, but we decided to risk it. We outfitted the boys in their rain boots, which was perfect for schlepping through the mud and water running throughout the orchard, and brought an extra warm layer. But, it didn't rain while we were picking. Literally as soon as we were finished, though, the storms rolled in. Whew. We hit up the apple cider donuts on the way out and called it a day. Apple crisp, here we come.
