The month of April was kind of a blur for us (anniversary, easter, baby celebration, my birthday, starting back to work, etc.). So. Andy had given me tickets to an off-broadway show for my birthday, but we didn't go until today.
We had a great lunch at a Thai restaurant beforehand, but service was a little slow. We thought we would have enough time to jump in a cab and get to the show in time to pick up the will call tickets. The show started at 3pm and tickets had to be picked up by 2:55pm. What time was it when we caught a taxi to head down to 42nd St from the Upper West Side at 81st street? Oh, 2:44pm. Crap.
As Andy and I peered out the front window of the taxi at a sea of taillights heading all the way South, we had the sinking feeling we were going to miss the show! At 2:55pm, we were only at 59th St and 11 Ave (17 short blocks and 2 long blocks away from the theater, about 1.2 miles). Plan B! Andy jumped out of the taxi in a full sprint (in dress shoes!) to see if he could at least get our tickets and see if they would let us in while our cabbie, realizing the urgency, started weaving in and out of traffic to get me there as well.
Much to our surprise, Andy was able to pick up the tickets, even though it was past time for pick up, and by the time I arrived we had about 30 seconds to get to our seats. Whew! We had made it! Andy ran the 1.2 miles through NYC traffic at a 6:40/mile pace, by the way.
The show was funny, and we had some dessert and coffee afterwards on the way home. A great birthday celebration for me, and a funny story to remember to go along with it! Only in NY, people.
