Run for the Parks, Kids

We signed the boys up for the kids races this morning, something Gabriel has always enjoyed since his very first one at age 2! And Judah was excited to be a part of his very first race too. We (bravely) decided to take the train part way and then let the boys scooter to the start, which was way down by the mall area in Central Park. The actual race was along the 72nd st transverse.

The race course is very short and varies by age. Judah, as a 4 year old, ran about 100m, and Gabriel as a 6 year old ran about 150m. Short little sprints, and a blue ribbon at the end. The organization is a wee bit lacking, so they had to wait around quite a bit while the organizers got through the age groups, and boys and girls race separate. Judah was initially very enthusiastic and confident about running as fast as he could (even insisted on wearing a sweat band!), but upon a little contemplation once in his corral, he was a little anxious waiting so Andy stayed with him, while I stayed farther back near Gabriel. I was straining to see what was going on ahead of me, but when I thought it was time for Judah's race, a bid farewell to G and hoofed it up to the finish line to capture J. He was not happy and Andy was running right beside him holding his hand, but he did it! Next up was G (the "pro"). He seemed to hesitate slightly in the beginning, but he had a strong finish. Both boys were really proud of their accomplishments, and so were we. We love exposing them to a sport that is so dear to us both. Our champs:
